Blues Lose First Game for Over Three Years...

Blues All-Stars suffered their first defeat for over three years as a youthful Sporting Plume went nap at Solihull Moors.
Blues started well and Phil Hawker cracked a shot against the crossbar but a Plume side containing players under the age of 25 proved too fit for a Blues side packed full of fortysomethings.
The fixture raised money for another worthwhile cause and was played in a good spirit throughout with Ian Atkins, Dave Barnett, Robert Hopkins, Guy Russell, Ian Clarkson, Jerry Gill, Graham Hyde, Dennis Bailey and Hawker all playing for Blues.
Kevan Broadhurst was in charge and there were appearances for Dave Busst (Coventry), Micky Clarke (Barnsley) and Dean Holtham (Swansea), Ron Green (Walsall) as well.
Blues’ next fixture is on March 21 2010 at Five Acre Stadium, North Littleton, Evesham, Worcestershire WR11 8QL with kick off time at 11am.
Jerry Gill’s first half strike was enough to maintain the All-Stars 100 percent record this season but it was a tough encounter against a hard working Monica Star outfit.
The fixture raised money for Solihull & Birmingham MS Society and with a healthy attendance at Sedgemere Sports Ground in Yardley, it proved to be a successful day.
Ian Atkins, Dave Barnett, Robert Hopkins, Kevan Broadhurst and Guy Russell all made their seasonal debuts along with ex Walsall shot-stopper Ron Green and Gavin.
Tom Ross was directing matters from the sidelines with Ian Clarkson, Graham Hyde, Dave Busst (Coventry, Micky Clarke (Barnsley) and Dean Holtham (Swansea) also turning out in a competitive clash.
The All-Stars retained a 100 percent record in 2008/09 and carried on in the same vein as they thumped Inter Volante 7-0 at The Glades in Catherine De Barnes.
TC – who was Blues’ manager between 1991 and 1993 – lives in Tenerife but was back in Britain on holiday and took the opportunity to catch up with some of his former charges.
Ex Blue Mick Halsall was also looking on as Kevan Broadhurst and Tom Ross started another season in charge.
Volante gave Blues an early scare when they hit the crossbar but Phil Hawker’s header separated the teams at half time.
However, Blues put their foot on the accelerator after the break and added six further goals through Paul Devlin (2), Mark Cooper, Dennis Bailey, Jerry Gill and former Barnsley star Micky Clarke.
Ian Clarkson, Graham Hyde, Dave Busst (Coventry) and Dean Holtham (Swansea) also played for Blues who are still on the lookout for more fixtures this season.

Birmingham City All-Stars enjoyed one of their most successful campaigns ever winning all eight games and raising thousands of pounds for various charities.
Twenty-two former Blues players appeared for the All-Stars this season as well as a host of other star names from various clubs around the country.
Crowds were royally entertained with Blues notching a half century of goals and conceding only nine in their fundraising fixtures this season.
Kevan Broadhurst and Tom Ross have managed the side throughout the last 12 months and have seen players from the seventies, eighties, nineties and 21st century wear the royal blue shirt.
The season starts again on August 16th – the day the first team lock horns with Manchester United – with a potential fixture at The Glades in Lugtrout Lane, Catherine De Barnes, Solihull.
All fixtures kick off at 11am unless otherwise stated and everyone is welcome as Birmingham City All-Stars look to raise more money for worthwhile charities in 2009/10.
Peschisolido – who is currently managing Burton Albion – ensured Blues maintained their 100% record for 2008/09 with an 11-1 romp at Rushall Olympic.
Mark Cooper also made his seasonal debut and rolled back the years with a hat-trick as the Kettering Town boss played in a striker’s role.
Former world and British Middleweight champions Wayne Elcock also notched a hat-trick as Blues racked up double figures for the first time this season.
King Arthur actually opened the scoring but were swept aside under an avalanche of goals that also saw Jerry Gill grab his second goal in as many appearances for the All-Stars.
Dave Barnett, Ian Clarkson, Ian Atkins, Phil Hawker and Robert Hopkins also appeared for the All-Stars along with guest appearances from Dean Holtham (Swansea), Micky Clarke (Barnsley), Ron Green (Walsall) and Elcock
Clarkson missed a penalty but the All-Stars still emerged comfortable winners before celebrating with a few hard-earned pints after another successful season.

WHAT a GRAND DONATION!

Blues’ support of the British Polio Fellowship received an amazing boost this week when the kind-hearted widow of the late, great Brian Clough sent a cheque for £1,000.

Birmingham City’s strong links with the charity were forged in the lead-up to April of this year when Blues played Wolves at St. Andrew’s in a game to remember legendary ex-player Jeff Hall on the 50th anniversary of his death.

Full-back Hall passed away on 4 April 1959 at the age of just 29 after suffering from Polio. His tragic early death helped kick-start vaccination in this country.

The Clough family’s generous pledge, from the memorial fund set up in memory of the former Nottingham Forest and Derby County manager, adds to the money and awareness raised at the match against Wolves and the hugely successful Jeff Hall Memorial Dinner held at St. Andrew’s prior to that fixture.

It is also particularly apt as Clough himself played, and scored, in the original Jeff Hall Memorial match, which took place at St. Andrew’s on 28 September 1959 and also featured the likes of Jimmy McIlroy and Tommy Docherty.

Birmingham City and Birmingham City Former Players Association would like to take this opportunity to thank Barbara, Brian’s widow, and the Clough family for the kind donation.
Blues were after revenge over their old rivals following Villa's 5-1 victory over Blues at the recent Masters Event at the NIA.
Gill was making his All Stars debut in a five-a-side to raise money for Air Ambulance and he scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory.
Paul Devlin had opened the coring for Blues after the interval before former Leeds strike Clyde Wijnhard equalised for the Villa.
However, Gill’s debut strike ensured that Blues maintained their 100% record this season with just one fixture remaining.
A crowd of well over 200 made for a cracking atmosphere at King Edward Camp Hill School with Robert Hopkins, Ian Clarkson, Devlin, Graham Hyde all playing for Blues along with Dave Busst (ex Coventry)and Micky Clarke (ex Barnsley).
Villa’s side contained Steve Staunton and Dave Norton along with Wijnhard (ex Leeds) and John Pearson (ex Kidderminster)
A crowd of over 400 saw Blues All-Stars maintain their 100% record for 2008/09 but only just as they ran out 5-4 winners.
Not only did the crowd see a pulsating clash but they also witnessed the first streaker of the season who must have been pleased it was a hot day!
In excess of £2,000 was raised for Marie Curie Cancer Fund on a day that saw Tommy Mooney (2) and Dennis Bailey score their first goals for the All Stars.
Paul Devlin and former apprentice Micky Clarke were also on target but Blues were pegged back after racing into a 3-0 half-time lead and the presence of former Shrewsbury, Port Vale and Yeovil striker Luke Rodgers gave the hosts a boost.
Robert Hopkins, Ian Atkins, Dave Barnett, Ian Clarkson and Kevan Broadhurst also played for the All-Stars with guest appearances from Ron Green (Walsall) Dave Busst (Coventry) and Dean Holtham (Swansea).

Match Report - WM Police - Bournville Lane XI (4-0)

Wayne Elcock delivered a double knockout blow as Blues All Stars continued their unbeaten run with a hard fought win over West Midlands Police.

The former WBU World and British Middleweight champion was making his debut for the All Stars along with Kevin Ashley, Tony Rees and Dennis Bailey and he bagged a brace to help the All Stars to a 4-0 win.
A large crowd were at Solihull Moors and raised valuable amounts of money in a ‘Help Our Troops’ afternoon and with girls from Spearmint Rhino offering the opportunity to have a charily car wash dressed in very little then who says there is no glamour at All-Stars fixtures?!
However, moving back to the football and the game was a competitive affair with three late goals finally killing off a strong challenge from the boys from Bournville Lane Police Station.
Tommy Mooney made his debut for the All Stars and lined up with former Blues Ian Clarkson, Dave Barnett, Graham Hyde, Robert Hopkins and Phil Hawker with Dave Busst (Coventry), Ron Green (Walsall), Micky Clarke (Barnsley) and Dean Holtham (Swansea) all turning out for the Blues in a star-studded team.
Rees and Clarkson netted their first goals of the campaign as Blues All Stars march on to Chelmsley Town for their next fixture on May 31st against a Chris Rogers Memorial XI

Blues All-Stars next fixture is at Chelmsley Town FC on May 31 2009 (kick off midday)

Match Report - Co-Op Select XI (8-0)

Blues All Stars kicked off a day of celebration in style by romping to an 8-0 win at Barrows lane in Yardley against a Co Op Select XI.

With the first team clinching promotion back to the Premier League in the afternoon, the All Stars offered their support in front of a big screen at the Co-Op with alcohol flowing freely!
However, there was the little matter of the fourth game of the 2008/09 season to complete first and the 100% record was maintained thanks to another hat-trick from Keith Bertschin.
The current Wigan Athletic coach took his tally to six from two games this season and Dave Barnett – making his first appearance for the All Stars since returning from Florida after a five-year absence - also bagged a brace.
Nicky Eaden, currently assisting former Blue Mark Cooper at Kettering, also made his debut for the All Stars and there were appearances from Guy Russell, Andy Harris, Ian Clarkson, Graham Hyde, Kevan Broadhurst and Martin O’Connor who was also on the scoresheet.
Dean Holtham (Swansea) and Micky Clarke (Barnsley) also guested for Blues with guest striker Joe Holtham also on the mark with two goals for the Blues.

Match Report - Dolphin Veterans - Baddesley Ensor (3-0)

Geoff Horsfield made his Blues All Stars debut just days after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The Horse announced his retirement from the professional game last week and is due to have an operation this week but still managed to find time to play in a charity game at Baddesley Ensor.

The match, at a village near Atherstone, was against Dolphin Veterans and saw Blues continue their unbeaten record in 2008-09 by recording a 3-0 win.
Another Blues debutant, Jon McCarthy, was on hand to score a goal whilst Horsfield also managed to notch along with Robert Hopkins to complete another good win for the All Stars.
Graham Hyde, Ian Atkins, Guy Russell, Ron Green (Walsall), Micky Clarke (Barnsley) and Dean Holtham (Swansea) also appeared for the All Stars who are now taking a break until the New Year.

Blues All-Stars will take a mid-season break and their next fixture is at the Co-Op in Barrows Lane on May 3 2009.

Match Report - Cadbury Athletic XI (8-1)

Over £2,500 was raised for Acorns Children’s Hospice as Blues All Stars continued their unbeaten start to 2008-09 at Cadbury.

Kevan Broadhurst and Tom Ross took a side to Bournville to face Cadbury Athletic Old Stars in memory of Aaron Craig and saw the All Stars record an 8-1 victory.
Ian Atkins, Guy Russell and Phil Hawker all made their seasonal debuts on a blistering hot day that saw Blues’ class tell in the second half.
Two goals in the first five minutes left Blues in charge but that was how it stayed until the break as Cadbury offered strong resistance.
However, a goal glut after the break saw Blues romp eight goals clear until a last-minute penalty for the hosts drew the biggest cheer of the day.
Martin O’Connor grabbed a hat-trick with further goals from Russell, Hawker (penalty), Graham Hyde and former Blues apprentices Micky Clarke (Barnsley) and Ian Jones also on target.
Former Blues players Ian Clarkson, Robert Hopkins, Broadhurst, Dave Busst (Coventry), Ron Green (Walsall) and Dean Holtham (Swansea) also appeared.

Match Report - Darren Tuckley XI - Kingshurst FC (9-2)

It might not have been St Andrew’s but Kingshurst Pavilions witnessed a goal bonanza as Blues All-Stars kicked off their new season.

Kevan Broadhurst and Tom Ross are at the helm once again as former players’ wheel out their creaking bones for a series of fixtures all in the name of charity.
Broadhurst, Ian Clarkson, Paul Devlin, Keith Bertschin, Martin O’Connor, Graham Hyde, Robert Hopkins and Andy Harris all donned the Blues shirt for a game against a Darren Tuckley XI.
Dave Busst (Coventry), Ron Green (Walsall), Micky Clarke (Barnsley) and Richard O’Kelly (Walsall) also turned out for the All-Stars and well over £1,000 was raised in a ‘Support Our Troops’ Day.
With a combined age of almost 500, there has been no pre-season and it is always followed by a liquid lunch as refuelling is not an option!
Just for the record, the final score was 9-2 with a hat-trick for Bertschin and a brace for Devlin along with further goals from O’Connor, Busst and a double from former Blues apprentice Ian Jones.

Next up are fixtures at Cadbury (September 28) and Atherstone Town (October 12)…
